GoPro’s New Hero Camera Is a Compact Companion to the Hero 13

Along with the more anticipated release of its new Hero 13 Black action camera, GoPro has also introduced a new ultra-compact compact action camera variant.

This additional new release is called the GoPro Hero and despite a name that could lead to it being confused with one of GoPro’s usual Hero line cameras, it’s a compact device of its own.

The GoPro Hero is described by its manufacturer as the brand’s smallest and lightest action camera model with a built-in LCD screen. Despite this, it comes with plenty of robust performance specs.

For one thing, true to its description as a tiny action camera, the Hero weighs no more than 86 grams or just over 3 ounces. Despite this compact size, it includes a rear screen (but no front screen as with the Hero 13) and is waterproof down to 15 feet.

The Hero also features the same HyperSmooth stabilization technology as the Hero 13 and offers a battery charge that lasts for up to 100 minutes on a single charge.

As for its video recording resolutions, they’re not as diverse as those of the Hero 13 Black but still usefully varied and sharp with the following shooting options:

  • 4K 16:9 @30/25 fps
  • 1080p 16:9 @30/25 fps
  • 7K 16:9 @60/50 fps

On the other hand, unlike its pricier and bigger cousin the Hero 13, the compact GoPro Hero doesn’t offer HDR video or much less HLG recording and its color video bit depth is just 8-bit instead of 10-bit.

According to GoPro, explaining its design reasoning for the tiny, affordable little Hero, “With built-in mounting fingers included, Hero has 35% less volume and 46% less mass than Hero13 Black,”

The manufacturer further elaborates,

“Use Hero’s LCD screen to frame your shots perfectly and simply swipe or press the mode button to swap modes. When you’re ready, hit the shutter button to start capturing. Completely waterproof and built with legendary GoPro durability, Hero is ready to capture the fun whether you’re ripping through mud, snow, water or just exploring a new city.”

The Hero is also a much more affordable alternative to the GoPro Hero 13 Black. It costs half as much as its bigger brother, with a price tag of $199.99 for the camera alone.

The GoPro Hero Action Camera is available for preorder but will start shipping as of September 22, roughly 12 days after the Hero 13 Black starts being sent to stores and buyers.
