RED Digital Cinema Inc, now a subsidiary of Nikon, announced the release of two new Red cinema cameras sporting Nikon Z Mounts.
Since the news of Nikon’s acquisition of RED, anticipation has grown over how the Japanese imaging giant will merge the two unique systems and create hybrid RED/Z bodies.
In response, RED has just announced the release of the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount digital cinema cameras. Filmmakers now have greater flexibility and a more expansive Nikon NIKKOR Z glass lineup for pro-grade cine applications.
RED Z Cinema Series
Coined as the Z Cinema Series, announcing two new Z-mount cameras coincides with the recent news of the new Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 Power Zoom. The Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lens is an ideal cine lens alternative now native to the RED Z Cinema cameras.
Both the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount and KOMODO-X Z Mount support the new 28-135mm f/4 PZ lens’s Power Zoom functionality.
The amalgamation of RED cinema smarts with Nikon Z glass opens up a new world of creative applications, ideal for videographers looking to upgrade from a Nikon Z full-frame digital mirrorless camera body.

RED V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount
The RED V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount is the brand’s flagship cine camera, now fitted with a fixed Nikon Z Mount.
The V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount boasts a class-leading 8K VV global shutter large-format image sensor, which delivers exceptional dynamic range and low-light performance.
In Extended Highlights mode, the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount offers 20+ stops of dynamic range to capture exceptional colour and image detail regardless of the light.
The KOMODO-X Z Mount
The second RED model to receive the Z Mount treatment is the RED KOMODO-X with its 6K Super 35 Global Shutter.
The RED KOMODO-X Z Mount cine camera offers high-speed performance and supports 6K video up to 80 fps and 4K up to 120 fps.
Like the flagship RED V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount, the new KOMODO-X Z boasts RED’s R3D Redcode RAW for flexible and efficient workflow and file management.
V-RAPTOR Z Camera to PL Lens Adapter
The final product announced as part of the new and powerful RED Z Cinema Series is the V-RAPTOR Z Camera to PL Lens Adapter.
RED’s new lens adapter supports the use of pro-grade cine-style ARRI PL-mount lenses with your V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount camera.
The V-RAPTOR Z Camera to PL Lens Adapter has a titanium core and is temperature-resistant. It also features Cooke/i Lens communication for optimal efficiency and control.
RED also offers a V-RAPTOR Z to PL with an Electronic ND Filter Adapter Pack and a built-in, electronically controlled variable ND filter system.
