Hot on the heels of the OM System’s OM-3 announcement, the brand also revealed an update to the hugely popular M.Zuiko ED 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 IS lens.
Ideal for sports, wildlife, and bird photography, the newly updated OM Systems M.Zuiko ED 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 IS Mark II lens elevates performance and outcomes.
OM’s popular M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 II and 25mm f/1.8 II primes have also received significant updates, including all new weather-sealed metal bodies.
M.Zuiko ED 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 IS Mark II Lens
The all-new ED 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 II telephoto zoom is almost identical to its Mark I predecessor, with minimal body design and dimensions differences.
The newly designed tripod collar and mount are a minor update to the lens’s exterior. Being a telephoto lens, you can quickly remove the collar via a clamp system.
It’s also worth pointing out that the original 100-400mm weighs 2.46 lb (1.12g), and the new Mark II version weighs 2.9 lb (1.3kg). While the latest edition is slightly heavier, the lens assembly is far more balanced and avoids the front-heavy imbalance of the original lens.
While the original M.Zuiko 100-400mm offered optical image stabilization, it didn’t sync with the IBIS found on many OM Systems MFT camera bodies.
The OM Systems M.Zuiko 100-400mm f/5.6-6.5 IS II offers a more sophisticated image stabilization that pairs seamlessly with camera in-body image stabilization. It’s especially handy when zoomed out at the 400mm end of the range.
OM’s new M.Zuiko 100-400mm f/5.6-6.5 IS II offers a 200-800mm full-frame equivalent focal range and a tightly compressed 12° to 3.1° field of view.
The lens also pairs with OM’s MC-20 2x teleconverter, delivering a crazy 1600mm full-frame equivalent focal distance.
Given the lens is a telephoto-to-super-telephoto option, the maximum f/5.6-6.3 is ideal for sports, wildlife, and bird photography or videography.
Furthermore, the 100-400mm f/5.6-6.5 IS II delivers fast, reliable, and accurate autofocus performance in both stills and video modes.
The internal lens assembly features 21 elements in 15 groups, including a pair of Super HR elements, four ED elements, and a pair of standard HR elements. Lens surfaces feature OM’s ZERO and fluorine coatings.
Externally, the M.Zuiko 100-400mm II lens features a weather-sealed assembly and measures 3.4 x 8.1″ (86.4 x 205.7mm) fully extended.
OM System’s new ED M.Zuiko 100-400mm f/5.6-6.5 IS II is available for pre-order now at around US$1,500.00
