Sony Unveils New 400-800mm & 16mm G Lenses

Sony has unveiled the ultra-wide FE 16mm f/1.8 G and the super-telephoto FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS lenses for Sony full-frame E-mount.

The Japanese optics and entertainment giant has delivered a pair of lenses at opposite ends of the focal range spectrum. However, the new glass demonstrates Sony’s commitment to meeting the needs of even the most extreme use cases.

At Sony, we are committed to providing creators of all levels with a diverse range of lens options to meet their artistic and technical needs – Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.

The Sony team has revealed the brand’s widest prime lens from the G series: the Sony FE 16mm f/1.8 G.

Sony’s ultra-wide full-frame prime promises exceptional image sharpness and fast performance from a relatively compact G series lens.

The Sony FE 16mm f/1.8 G measures 2.91 x 3″ (73.8 x 75mm) and weighs a surprisingly light 10.7 oz (304g). Despite its compact size and form, the latest entry is a premium entry.

Some key specs that stand out include the ultra-wide 107° field of view,  a 5.9″ (15cm) minimal focus distance, and the fast f/1.8 maximum aperture for defined subject separation and background blur.

Internally, the FE 16mm f/1.8 G features 15 elements in 12 groups, including a pair of advanced aspherical lens elements. The lens assembly also includes three extra-low dispersion elements and one Super ED element.

Thanks to the dual Sony XD Linear AF motors and quiet internal focus process, fast performance is assured.

Externally, the dust and moisture-resistant lens boasts a focus hold button, physical aperture ring,  and AF/MF switch for quick focus selection.

The 16mm F1.8 G is now the widest prime lens in our G lens lineup and pairs seamlessly with all our latest full-frame Alpha series cameras, as well as the FX3 and FX30 cinema cameras. With 79 E-Mount lenses now available, we are continuing our mission to ensure photographers, filmmakers, and creators have a breadth of high-performing lens options to bring their visions to life.

Videographers and photographers will appreciate Sony’s efforts to mitigate focus breathing and the ability to deliver AF at up to 120fps.

At the other end of the spectrum, Sony has announced the FE 400-800 f/6.3-8 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens to meet (and exceed) the needs of sports, wildlife, and bird photographers.

The Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS is neither compact nor lightweight. It measures a considerable 4.72 x 13.6″ (11.98 x 34.6cm) and weighs 5.45 lb (2.47kg).

Fortunately, the super-telephoto zoom features a fixed, rotating tripod collar and Sony’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilization.

As Sony’s first Alpha zoom lens to hit the 800mm focal range, there’s much to get excited about. Furthermore, the lens is compatible with Sony 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending the range to 1120mm and 1600mm.

Internally, the Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS houses 27 elements in 19 groups, including six ED elements to control ghosting, flare, and aberrations.

With an f/6.3-8 maximum aperture and an 11-blade aperture diaphragm, subject separation, background blur, and center sharpness are assured.

The dust and moisture-resistant body is ideal for all forms of outdoor photography, and the fluorine-coated front element repels moisture and oil residue.

The external barrel features multiple switches to control focus limiting, OSS modes, and AF/MF functions. The barrel also houses three customizable focus hold buttons spaced at 90º increments.

Sony’s FE 400-800mm super-telephoto beast supports 105mm front mount filters.

One of the essential elements of a lens of this nature is its fast focus performance, and the new Sony boasts quick focus thanks to dual linear motors.

At Sony, we are dedicated to equipping photographers and videographers with the tools they need to push creative boundaries. The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is a testament to this commitment, delivering unparalleled reach and reliability as a super telephoto within the G Series lens line-up – Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc.

The Sony FE 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G OSS super-telephoto zoom lens is expected to retail for around US$3,000.00.
